eLLMo vs Variant

Both use AI to pick what to test. Only one builds the answer into your theme.

Variant AI CRO and eLLMo both promise the tests your team never gets to. Variant's AI writes each test as JavaScript that edits your page in the shopper's browser. eLLMo finds why buyers leave with simulated buyers, builds the fix as real theme code, checks it with the same buyers, and ships it into your theme.

At a glance

Variant and eLLMo, row by row.

What each tool does at each step. Variant rows come from Variant's own pages and from the code it serves to storefronts, as of October 2026.

  1. Where the test idea comes from

    Variant

A Research Agent that "finds friction in shopper behavior and ad context". One reviewer says its ideas come from "best practices and what leading stores in the space are doing".

    eLLMo

Simulated buyers, matched to your customers, shop your product page and say in their own words why they would not buy. Ranked by how many hit each reason.

  2. How the new version is built

    Variant

A Dev Agent "designs and codes" each test, or you use the no-code visual editor. Your team approves every test.

    eLLMo

eLLMo writes the copy and builds the section as theme code on a draft of your theme. You approve it.

  3. When you can ship

    Variant

When the test ends. Variant does not publish how it calls a winner.

    eLLMo

As soon as the same simulated buyers show the reason is gone. Ship the fix to the product with a one-click undo, or A/B test it on live traffic first.

  4. What changes the page

    Variant

Test code that runs in the shopper's browser after your theme loads. It finds parts of the page, then removes, restyles or adds to them.

    eLLMo

Shopify draws both versions from your theme's code. A small script in your theme's head only picks the version.

  5. Hiding while the test loads

    Variant

Tested parts of the page stay hidden for up to 2 seconds while the code loads. On one store we read, that included the add to cart button.

    eLLMo

No part of the page is hidden.

  6. After the test

    Variant

A reviewer says a winner is implemented "in one click". On the stores we read, changes kept running as JavaScript on every page view, beside the live tests.

    eLLMo

Promote assigns the tested template to the product. The winner becomes theme code, not a script running on top of your page.

  7. Price

    Variant

On the Shopify App Store, from $199 a month for up to 5,000 sessions. Variant's own site lists $1,199 a month for up to 100,000 sessions.

    eLLMo

Plans are scoped to your catalog, not your store traffic.

We read Variant's own pages, and the scripts public storefronts that run Variant load in any browser, in October 2026. Rows that say "stores we read" describe what we saw on those storefronts, not a claim Variant makes.

Where they differ

Editing the page versus changing the page.

Variant and eLLMo both use AI to decide what to test. They differ on what the test is made of, and that decides your speed, your upkeep and where the winner lives.

01

A test that runs in the browser, on every view

Variant's tests are JavaScript. In the code Variant serves to storefronts, each test is a block of code that runs after your theme has drawn the page, finds parts of it by their CSS selectors, and removes, restyles or adds to them. Most AI testing tools work this way, because it lets them change anything without touching your theme.

The cost is that every shopper's browser does that work, on every view. On the stores we read, tested parts of the page stay hidden for up to 2 seconds while the code loads, so the shopper sees a page with pieces missing. On one store, the hidden parts included the add to cart button.

eLLMo changes the page itself. The new section is real theme code in a copy of your product template, and Shopify draws it the same way it draws the rest of your store. Nothing edits the page after it appears, and no part of it is hidden.

02

Selectors break when your theme changes

Code that finds parts of the page by CSS selectors works until the page changes. A theme update renames a class, a section moves, an app redraws the product form, and the selector stops matching. VWO, one of the oldest tools in this category, documents the result: changed identifiers lead to "no changes (or in rare cases, incorrect changes) being applied on the page." The test keeps running either way.

An eLLMo test does not look for anything on your page. It is a template. eLLMo checks every running test every 15 minutes, and if the test page is gone from your live theme or the template it was copied from was edited, it pauses the test and tells you why.

03

Where the winner lives

On the stores we read, Variant's code carried far more rules that run for every matching shopper, outside any test, than live tests. One store had 29 such rules beside 2 tests. A reviewer says they use Variant "for ongoing store improvements". A change kept that way goes on running as JavaScript in every shopper's browser, with the same loading and hiding as a test, for as long as it stays live.

In eLLMo, promoting a winner assigns the tested template to the product. The change becomes part of your theme: theme files and product data, drawn by Shopify. There is no script painting it on and nothing to rebuild.

04

Behavior shows where buyers leave. Buyers tell you why.

Variant's Research Agent reads shopper behavior and ad context, and a reviewer describes its ideas as based on best practices and on what leading stores are doing. Behavior data is good at showing where people drop off. It cannot tell you what they were thinking when they did.

eLLMo asks. Simulated buyers, built from real buyer data and matched to your customers, shop your live page and say where they hesitated, in their own words. Each finding carries a count, so the test you run is the reason the most buyers gave, with their quotes attached.

05

You know before you test

An A/B test is how Variant finds out whether a change works, so the answer waits on live traffic, and some of your shoppers see the change before anyone knows if it helps.

eLLMo finds out first. The simulated buyers who found the problem shop the new page on a draft of your theme, so you see whether the reason they gave went away before a single shopper sees the change. If it did, you can ship the fix to the product that day, with a one-click undo, or A/B test it to prove it on your orders. Either way, your traffic only goes to a change the buyers already checked.

A fair read

Which one fits your team.

Variant covers more of the store than eLLMo tests today. Here is where each one fits.

Variant is a good fit when

  • You want to change pages eLLMo does not test today, such as the cart, collections and landing pages built for your ads.
  • You want personalization and product recommendations in the same tool.
  • You want a regular meeting with a testing partner as part of the plan.

eLLMo is a good fit when

  • You want changes built into your theme, not run as a script on top of it.
  • A fast page and an add to cart button that is always there matter more than changing anything anywhere.
  • You want to know why buyers leave, in their words, before you test.
  • You want copy and sections written for you and shipped as theme code.
  • You want to know a fix works before you spend traffic on it.
How eLLMo works

A developer and a CRO team that never log off.

eLLMo does the whole job: it finds why shoppers leave, builds the fix, checks it with the same buyers before anyone sees it, and ships it, with or without an A/B test.

01 Find

Simulated buyers find why

10 to 50 simulated buyers, matched to your customers, shop your live product page and say where they stopped, ranked by how many hit each reason.

02 Build

eLLMo builds the fix

eLLMo writes the copy or builds the missing section as real theme code on a draft of your theme, at any hour, with no ticket.

03 Check

The same buyers check it

The simulated buyers who found the problem shop the new page, so you know whether the reason went away before any shopper sees it.

04 Ship

Ship it, or prove it

Publish the fix with a one-click undo, or A/B test it on live traffic. eLLMo watches every test around the clock.
